Underbrushing clears the growth out from under the trees and leaves the big trees standing. Three Crosses Land Services does underbrush clearing on wooded lots, back acreage and the woods behind a yard around Chattanooga. Brush, briars, vines, privet, saplings and small trees come out. Estimates are free.
The tool is a drum mulcher on our mini skid steer, the same machine behind our forestry mulching work. It grinds standing brush and small trees into chips and leaves them on the ground. The machine fits through a standard fence gate, so fenced back yards and tight wooded lots stay workable.
Around Chattanooga, ridges and wooded hollows get about 55 inches of rain a year. Woods left alone fill in fast from the ground up. We work about 40 miles out from our base just north of Chattanooga, into Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia. Three Crosses Land Services is a veteran-owned family business, licensed and insured.

Underbrushing takes out the growth between the forest floor and the canopy. Briars and vines come out with the privet, the saplings and the small trees crowding the trunks. The mature trees stay standing, along with any younger trees you pick to keep. That choice is why people also call it selective clearing.
Each job starts with a look at the woods. You point out the trees that stay, the property corners and anything to avoid, like a well head. Then the drum mulcher works in from the edge and grinds the undergrowth into chips. Those chips stay on the ground as a mulch layer that holds soil in place while it breaks down.
Privet is the shrub to watch for. Tennessee's agriculture department says privets grow 8 to 20 feet tall and form dense thickets that shade out native shrubs. The drum mulcher grinds privet stems and the underbrush beneath them into chips. Ground buried under vines and privet is kudzu and invasive plant removal work.
Clearing the understory gives you the woods back. You can see the trees you own and walk between them again. Property lines, old fences and the shape of the ground come back into view. A boundary grown shut is fence line clearing, and we can price both on one visit.
The CDC says ticks live in grassy, brushy or wooded areas, and many people get them in their own yard. Its advice for a yard includes clearing tall grass and brush at the edge of lawns. It also suggests a 3 foot wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas. Underbrushing the woods edge clears that brush, and the chips stay on the ground where it stood.
NFPA's wildfire advice says to remove ladder fuels, the vegetation under trees, so a surface fire cannot reach the crowns. Its extended zone runs 30 to 100 feet from the home, out to 200 feet. There, the goal is to interrupt fire's path and keep flames smaller and on the ground. Underbrushing the woods past the yard takes out that understory and leaves the canopy standing.
Size and density set most of it. The price follows how much ground you want opened and how thick the understory has grown. A privet thicket takes longer than open woods with scattered brush, and saplings take more passes than briars. A tight stand of trees you want kept slows the machine down too.
Ground and access come next. Steep ridge sides and a long pull from the trailer add time to a day. Fences, wells and buried lines inside the woods mean working around them. Wet clay slows the machine down, so we watch the weather.
We come look at the woods in person, since photos leave out slope and access. The estimate is free. Three Crosses Land Services is a veteran-owned family business, and our motto is Faith. Integrity. Service. Call or text (423) 260-5675.

We come out, look at the growth and how equipment gets in, then give you a price. The number tracks how thick the growth is and how much ground it covers.
You approve the price and we put the job on the schedule. We confirm the day ahead of time so you know when the machine is coming.
The mini skid steer comes in through the gate and the mulcher goes over the growth. Bigger stems come down first, then get ground into chips.
The chips get spread level across the cleared ground. What is left is open space you can mow, fence, or use for whatever comes next.
