Forestry mulching is how we clear overgrown ground in East Ridge. Our mini skid steer runs a drum mulcher that turns brush, vines and saplings into wood chips where they stand. Those chips blanket the ground, so most of the brush stays right on the lot.
East Ridge calls itself the gateway to Tennessee, and much of its housing is older, with mature yards. In yards like these, the strip along the fence and the far back corner tend to grow in first. Those are the spots we clear, along with old stumps and brush piles too big for the curb.
Three Crosses Land Services covers every part of East Ridge, working from just north of Chattanooga. Estimates are free and done in person, and a call or text sets one up.

The city takes its name from its spot due east of Missionary Ridge. The ridge has very steep, nearly vertical sides that rise more than 330 feet. The Bachman Tubes run beneath it and link East Ridge with downtown Chattanooga. Kudzu has infested the ridge, and Chattanooga has even tried grazing goats and llamas on it.
Chattanooga borders East Ridge on the west, north and east, and the Georgia state line runs along the south. The city covers 8.3 square miles and counted 22,167 people at the 2020 census. It became an incorporated city in 1921. In 1973 the city bought a 175-acre farm on Camp Jordan Road that became Camp Jordan Park.
The Census Bureau estimates 9,587 occupied homes in East Ridge, and close to 6 in 10 are owner occupied. The median home was built in 1964. Yards that old often hold mature trees, and fence lines and back corners can go uncut for years. Privet and kudzu fill those spots fast once they get a start.
East Ridge sanitation picks up brush, but limbs over 6 inches thick have to be cut into 18 inch sections. Nothing larger is accepted. Construction materials are not collected from residents at all. A property in violation of city code can also draw a citation, with a compliance date set for cleanup.
Sawing a grown-in fence line or a privet thicket down to curb size is slow, heavy work. Fence line clearing grinds the saplings and vines out of the row and leaves the chips where they fall. When vines have swallowed a back lot, kudzu removal cuts them to the ground and mulches them. Kudzu sprouts again from root crowns in the soil, so a patch takes repeat cuts.
Stump grinding takes old stumps down below the soil line. Piles you want gone ride out on our dump trailer for brush hauling. Burning inside city limits takes a $75 city permit and an inspection first. Even then, it is only allowed from October 1 to April 30.
